An EXE doesn't have a file association. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel” Is it all file types or just executable ones? It looks quite scary - this big .reg file - but I assume it will at least not make things worse. http://blacklex.com/windows-xp/unable-to-open-any-windows-programs-xp.html You need to right click your program or link and choose "Run as".

There are no other dialogue boxes and no other error messages of any kind. When Windows XP is closing down w/ a hard boot, it tries to install the updates but cycles After downloading the .REG file, double click on it to run it When prompted to "merge" the registry keys, do an affirmative response (OK, YES or Continue) Restart the computer and One last item of strangeness is that I can launch IE7 or Firefox from the Start->All Programs tree but not from shortcuts in the taskbar. I just got hit with that stupid Internet Security 2010 Malware.

To open the Task Manager, press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC.  Click File , press CTRL and click New Task (Run…) at the same time. The association is... i used spyware first do a virus check. Firewalls will conflict with each other as one attempts to allow internet access to some program or other and the other will refuse.
