I copied a working kernel's /boot/config-… into the root of the source tree as .config and executed the standard commands for building the kernel also shown above. When I reboot I see all kernels as menu entries and choose 3.8.1. Making changes to your Windows (ntfs) partition while it is hibernated could be dangerous--it could cause Windows to not resume from hibernation or to crash after resuming. Then run the ntfsfix command on your NTFS partition.
If you have, uninstall usbmount and you will probably find that your problem goes away. This is why it is in protected mode and you cannot mount it (without being root).
